Dental Insurance Benefits for Seniors and Retirees

Why Is Dental Health Care So Important?

The facts of American’s dental health tell the story. Adults aged 35 to 44 have a 1 in 7 chance at having gum disease, rate increases to 1 in 4 after the age of 65. Over time, tooth decay leads to drillings with fillings and sometimes dental implants or tooth extractions. Getting in front of these issues early with preventative dental care will improve your overall oral health.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the result of bacterial infections and inflammation around the gums and bone. Early stages of the disease shows as gingivitis, which is swollen gums and inflammation around the teeth. Inflammation is a natural response when harmful bacteria is present.

As the condition progresses into chronic periodontitis, the gums may pull away from your teeth and decay. This leads to bone loss and teeth that become loose or fall out.

The CDC has reported that 47.2% of adults over the age of 30 have some sort of periodontitis. This statistic moves up to over 70% in seniors 65 years and older. If you are experiencing redness or bleeding in your gums, you’ll want to choose a plan that offers Periodontal dental services.

Your Dentist May Find Oral and Pharyngeal (Mouth and Throat Cancer)

When you have dental benefits and go to your check ups, your dentist will see beyond your teeth. Dentists are on the frontline of finding other mouth and throat anomalies. More than 7,800 people die each year from oral and pharyngeal cancer in the United States.

Dental Benefit Plans Include

With benefits for over 300 services and procedures…
  • Preventive Dental Benefits: Routine exams, bitewings, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and more.
  • Basic Dental Benefits: Full mouth X-rays, amalgam restoration (silver fillings), simple extractions and more.
  • Major Dental Benefits (on Silver, Gold, Platinum Plans): Onlays, maxillary partial denture – resin base, denture repair, surgical removal of teeth, deep sedation/general anesthesia, endodontics – root canal, periodontal scaling and root planning, crown and crown repairs, pontics – porcelain fused to noble metal, and more.
  • Orthodontia Benefits (on Silver, Gold, Platinum Plans): A benefit available to dependent children of the plan.

About Dental Implants

With Core Dental Insurance, the plan will have a copay for your implant exams and diagnostics. Like most dental insurance plans, the implant procedures have coverage (Platinum plan), though the implant itself is not.

By knowing up front that parts of the treatment plan are not covered, members are more likely to rely on their flexible spending or other funding options.

We do recommend a pretreatment estimate from all dentists providing services. In some cases, it also helps plan to break up the implant treatment plan over two calendar years if the healing portion allows for it.

Plans Start At $21 / Month

When Can Seniors Enroll And Get New Health Insurance?

Check If You Can Receive Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program

If you are 65 years old and not receiving social security, you may have to sign up for Medicare. If you are not nearing retirement age, you may qualify for assistance through the federal Medicare program or Children’s Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP.

Medicaid eligibility is determined based on your income. Medicare is also available for the elderly, pregnant women and adults and children with disabilities.

Enroll In Qualified Health Plans Certified By The Health Insurance Marketplace During Open Enrollment Periods

The federal government creates an “open enrollment period” where you may change your health insurance without a qualifying event. An example event is acquiring new health insurance if you were to become employed. This is when you may drop your current insurance and find new major medical policies.

The certified health plans offered on the marketplace are required to provide essential health benefits, cover pre-existing conditions. These traditional health plans have limits on deductibles, copayments and out-of-pocket maximum amounts. These are policies that are similar to employer-sponsored insurance. These same policies can be found on private exchanges, like Smart and Simple Insurance.

You Can Enroll Anytime For Short-Term Medical Policies

Though the benefits are not as robust as an ACA-compliant plan, Short Term Health Insurance can save you money. These plans are recommended for persons that are in relatively good health. Short-term health insurance plans may deny any claims considered as pre-existing conditions. They may pay for treatments for medical conditions you may have had before the plan started.

If you are just getting started owning your own business, getting an affordable Short-Term Medical Policy will help you control costs from the start.
